Violence against women and girls

Brief Description
This report included a module of questions on domestic violence that was administered to women age 18-49 in the subsample of households selected for the state module. A similar module was also included in NFHS-4, although the NFHS-4 module was administered to women age 15-49. Therefore, comparisons over time cannot be made for women age 18-49. In accordance with the World Health Organization's guidelines on the ethical collection of information on domestic violence, only one eligible woman per household was randomly selected for the module, and the module was not administered to eligible woman age 18-49 if privacy could not be obtained after at least three attempts during the survey. In total, 72,056 women completed the domestic violence module. Only 4 percent of women eligible for the domestic violence module could not be successfully interviewed with the module because privacy could not be obtained or for other reasons. Special weights were used to adjust for the selection of only one woman per household and to ensure that the domestic violence subsample was nationally representative.
